My Research & Editorial Process

My Mission

Here at Web Host Pedia, my mission is to create reliable resources that help people find the best web hosting services for their needs. I do this by digging deep into industry reports, analyzing different hosting providers, and conducting my own in-house testing. I then create practical tools, comparisons, and other helpful resources that my readers can rely on to make informed hosting decisions. The best part, everything I create is fun to read and easy to understand.

Code of Ethics

My work is guided by a strong code of ethics that informs everything I do. As I continue offering high-quality web hosting resources, the principles below guide my efforts:

My Commitment to Testing

My editorial efforts are supported by my experience testing hosting services and building websites for over 15 years. I am committed to hands-on testing – extensively evaluating each platform myself before making recommendations.

In order to provide the most detailed and extensive web host reviews possible, I sign up for various hosting plans the provider offers for the maximum length, ensuring I have enough data to compare and contrast against other companies. I always maintain complete secrecy on sign up, posing as a regular customer, which I believe is the only way to gather accurate data relevant to real users.

I start by purchasing a domain name and setting up a standard WordPress installation with the Kadence theme and 5-6 popular plugins. I then monitor the site with third-party applications and software to gather real-world insights and data to inform my reviews.

My in-house testing remains on the cutting-edge. I invest in advanced tools and infrastructure to thoroughly stress test hosts under real-world conditions. This commitment to rigorous benchmarking allows me to provide the most accurate hosting insights. However, I’m always raising the bar to better serve my readers.

Examples of My Research:

Explore and Compare Top Providers

I offer detailed comparisons of the best web hosting providers. Having tested these hosts extensively myself, I can provide unbiased insights into their strengths and weaknesses. Readers can explore various options using my recommendation tools tailored to their needs. I am committed to empowering my audience with honest hosting information.

My Testing Tools and Process

Evaluating web hosts requires more than just signing up for accounts and browsing around. To truly understand performance and reliability, you need hard data.

That’s why I utilize a suite of advanced proprietary tools for rigorous benchmarking and stress testing under real-world conditions. These services provide granular insights and identify key differences between providers.

The tools in my testing stack include:

Uptime Robot logo in gray color

UptimeRobot is a service that monitors your website’s uptime and performance, sending alerts if any downtime or issues are detected. It offers various types of monitoring, including HTTP(s), keyword, ping, and port monitoring, and provides detailed reports, analytics, and integrations with third-party services.

Pingdom is a website performance and monitoring tool that provides real-time insights into your website’s uptime, speed, and user experience. It offers features like page speed monitoring, transaction monitoring, server uptime monitoring, and real-time alerts to keep you informed of any issues or downtimes.

K6 from Grafana Labs logo in gray color

k6 from Grafana Labs is a performance testing tool used to analyze the behavior and reliability of web services under various load conditions. It allows developers to write scripts that simulate a number of virtual users to test how systems, applications, and APIs will perform under heavy traffic, providing detailed insights and analytics.

GT Metrix logo in gray color

GTmetrix is a tool that analyzes the speed and performance of websites, offering detailed insights into factors affecting loading times. It provides actionable recommendations for improvements, visualizations of performance metrics, and the ability to track the website’s speed over time.

Sucuri logo in gray color

Sucuri is a security platform that provides website owners with tools to protect their sites from malware, attacks, and other security threats. It offers features like malware scanning, website firewall, DDoS protection, and incident response services to quickly address security issues.

By combining these best-in-class tools, I can thoroughly benchmark web hosts on key metrics like uptime, load times, and security. The performance data and insights I gather inform my rigorous testing methodology and allow me to provide in-depth, unbiased evaluations.

Uptime Monitoring Dashboard

Uptime is the amount of time (in days, hours and minutes) the server or your website has been running, usually listed as a percentage for a given period. Most web host providers offer a guaranteed uptime (usually around the 99.9% mark), and back this up with a refund if they fail to hit that figure.

My custom dashboard continually monitors our test sites globally. It sends out a request every minute to see how the website is performing. This allows me to track outages and availability over months of testing. I can easily identify hosts with consistent uptime across multiple regions.

Page Load Testing Suite

Load testing is the process of putting simulated demand on a website in a way that tests or demonstrates its behaviour under various conditions. It ensures that your website can perform as expected when there is increased demand on its resources.

My suite of scripts simulates real user traffic to measure page load times under different conditions. I can benchmark performance for sites both large and small.

CDN Benchmarking

I assess content delivery network performance using a combination of tools. This reveals how well hosts optimize static asset delivery globally.

My Methodology & Approach

I have developed a rigorous testing methodology leveraging proprietary tools and benchmarks. At the core is an advanced testing infrastructure that mimics real-world hosting environments under load. This allows me to identify key performance differences between providers when it matters most.

Testing is conducted across numerous data centers to control for variability. I also evaluate customer support responsiveness by making incognito inquiries. My researchers monitor uptime over months using automated checking. This produces a comprehensive assessment of each provider.

To measure speed, I deploy custom benchmarks that assess page load times, content delivery networks, caching, and more. Tests are repeated daily across multiple server locations. This allows me to diagnose performance degradation over time.

I draw upon over a decade of experience building and maintaining websites to interpret results. Quantitative performance data is analyzed in the context of qualitative factors like ease of use. This produces nuanced hosting recommendations tailored to user needs.

Finally, I present hosting insights in a fun and engaging way. I put myself in the beginner’s shoes to create guides that are welcoming not intimidating. I want to inspire my audience while also making them savvier web hosting users.

The types of testing I conduct includes:

My Recommendations

I take a personalized approach – tailoring hosting advice to the reader’s specific needs and level of experience. My advanced recommendation tools ask about your site goals, traffic, budget and more. This allows me to suggest the ideal hosting solution for YOU – eliminating the guesswork. Readers appreciate my ability to provide customized picks.

Fact Checking and Updates

I adhere to strict accuracy standards – rigorously fact checking every piece of content before publication. However, mistakes can happen in the fast-moving hosting industry. If I miss a fact, I immediately update the site and correct any inaccuracies. My readers can trust that I will rectify any errors in a timely manner.

I also stay on top of the latest industry developments. I monitor for new product releases, policy changes, security issues and more. I then update my existing content to reflect the current state of web hosting. My readers know my guides always contain up-to-date, truthful information from real testing.

How I Keep Web Host Pedia Free

I believe everyone should have free access to resources that help them succeed online. As a result, I do not charge for any of my content or tools. I also refuse to clutter my site with annoying ads that detract from the user experience.

Instead, I sustain my free model through affiliate partnerships. If a reader clicks on a recommended provider and signs up, I may earn a small commission at no cost to the user. However, this never impacts my impartiality – I only recommend hosts that meet my strict editorial criteria.

Responding to Readers

I try to respond to reader inquiries swiftly. If you need an immediate answer to a question, I will get back to you as soon as possible. User feedback is essential for improving my recommendations. Please reach out if you ever have a comment or concern about my research. I greatly appreciate your suggestions.
